"#4 Top 100 Italian Wines of 2023: Hailing from the firm's prime vineyard in the Bricco Boschis cru, Cavallotto's magnificent 2017 Riserva Vigna San Giuseppe opens with classic Barolo aromas of new leather, forest floor, tobacco and ripe berry that mingle with floral scents of dog rose and iris. Full-bodied but smooth and enveloping, the firmly structured palate combines power and finesse, featuring succulent Morello cherry, ripe cranberry, star anise and baking spice accompanied by tightly knit, refined tannins. Fresh acidity – impressive given the scorching vintage – keeps it well balanced. Drink2029–2044"

"The dark style of Alfio Cavallotto is, if possible, enhanced here by the natural style of the vintage. This is a cask sample, still in oak and not bottled yet. It has an intense smoky woodland nose, with a lot of mineral earthiness along with liquorice, graphite, tar and earthy dark cherry. Large, powerful and extracted tannins dominate the palate, with crisp, brilliant acidity. A really muscular and angular wine, almost over-extracted and quite biting on the finish, but prepared for the long haul."

"Organic fruit for this wine comes from a small parcel within the hilltop Bricco Boschis cru with 60-year-old vines. The Cavallotto 2017 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe shows ample texture and softness with layers of dark fruit, plum, dried cherry, baked terracotta and spice. This vintage delivers more accessible fruit overall, and the Cavallotto house style delivers elegance and depth. Production is 6,637 bottles."

"The 2017 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is redolent of dark fruits, leather, incense, tobacco, lavender and dried herbs. This strapping, muscular Barolo has a ton to offer. All it needs is to soften a bit, and whether or not that happens is something of an open question at this stage."

"Generous, this red displays a mix of woodsy underbrush, tar, truffle and plum flavors. Solidly built, with dense, pointed tannins underlying the superlong finish. Though balanced in the end, this could use more time to integrate. Best from 2025 through 2043. ‡B.S."

"Offering intensity and concentration, the drop-dead gorgeous 2019 Vigna San Giuseppe Riserva, part of the Dynamic Duo of Cavallotto's extraordinary 2019 Riservas, is intensely fragrant, featuring pronounced aromas of violet, baking spice, new leather and baked plum. Offering depth and layers of flavors, the delicious, structured palate delivers layers of ripe Marasca cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg and crushed mint before closing on a note of Earl Grey tea. A network of firm but velvety tannins provides support while bright acidity keeps it energized and balanced. This is one for the long haul. Drink 2031–2054. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O'Keefe April 2025"

"The organic Cavallotto 2019 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe shows thick texture and density with dark fruits, plum and blackberry layered with extra depth. This wine makes a big impact on the palate and wraps lavishly over the senses. This is one of the most opulent and full-bodied editions I have yet tasted. The fruit is sourced from a 2.38-hectare site with 60-year-old vines with southwest exposures at 310 and 340 meters in elevation. The wine sees 60 months of careful maturation in 20-hectoliter and 100-hectoliter Slavonian botti. In a curious sequence of numbers, production is 8,888 bottles, 666 magnums and 111 three-liter bottle formats."

"The 2019 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is a very special wine. In fact, it is one of the most complete vintages of this wine I can remember tasting because it offers notable finesse to complement the virile power that is such a signature here. Black fruit, gravel, incense, licorice, dried herbs and lavender saturate the palate, framed by incisive yet well-integrated tannins that wrap it all together. The 2021 was impressive from tank. It is all that and more today."

"Castiglione Falletto. Deep ruby. Balsamic and ethereal and very slow to open up. Fluid raspberry fruit, with supple acidity, becoming fuller and more aromatic on the finish. Bags of sandy tannins. Endlessly long and its generosity is reined in by the tannins. Stunning. (WS)"

"Wild red berry, violet dark spice, forest floor, tobacco and new leather are just some of the aromas you'll find on the gorgeous 2018 Bricco Boschis San Giuseppe Riserva. Still young and tight but already balanced and utterly delicious, the full-bodied palate delivers layers of raspberry compote, ripe cherry, star anise, blood orange and baking spice. Firm, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity provide age-worthy support. Drink 2028–2043. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O'Keefe August 2024"

"Aged in Slavonian oak botti for an impressive 60 months, the organic 2018 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is the big gun from vintner Alfio Cavallotto and his merry team in Castiglione Falletto. This wine is impossibly complex and deep with savory knots that are tied into fabric or rich dark fruit. The bouquet opens to blackberry, plum cola, dried herb, spice and a lingering floral note of lilac or violet. To my palate, the Riserva Vignolo has a little more vertical lift and minerality in this vintage. The Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is more about heft and texture, with dusty tannin. Production is 7,222 bottles."

"The 2018 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is quite the powerhouse. Sage, menthol, licorice, cloves, dried flowers, scorched earth, leather and gravel infuse the San Giuseppe with all of its classic signatures. A dense, backward Barolo, the 2018 is going to need a handful of years to soften. It is a super-impressive wine for what has turned out to be an irregular vintage. This is beautifully done."

"Tightly wound, this red offers a glimpse of cherry, cranberry, rhubarb, earth and underbrush flavors all rolled up like a 20-dollar bill inside the grip of dusty tannins. The fruit emerges with a few minutes of aeration, revealing the promise of this red. Best from 2026 through 2045. From Italy.—B.S."

"Lustrous ruby. A nose exuding minerality, dark earth and shy raspberry. Suave and cool on the palate and still quite closed. Finely ground tannins make their presence felt but never dominate the fruit. Elegant and long. (WS) 14.5%"
