"A wonderfully intricate nose reveals its facets at a measured pace. Cedar melds with truffle and winter mint, then pressed rose and lilac lift the perfumes to sweeter heights. Constant throughout are the wild forest berries that provide the foundation for the rich, concentrated core. A touch of salted liquorice lends countering umami dimension and all the while, sculpted tannins slink seductively to a gripping crescendo. Beautiful and long. Made since 2011 from two rented plots totalling just 0.25ha, Altare's Cannubi occupies just four barriques (one new, three used) for a production of less than 1,500 bottles."

"The 2021 Barolo Cannubi is a pretty potent wine. Then again, Altare's Cannubi emerges from a purely south-facing section of the vineyard. Dark cherry/plum fruit, cloves, licorice, new leather and incense are dialed up. This is an especially virile Barolo with a ton of character."

"Fruit comes from a leased site in Cannubi, and the first vintage made was 2011. Jumping forward one decade, the Elio Altare 2021 Barolo Cannubi is a rounded and fleshed-out expression with dark fruit, dried cherry, spice and hints of cured tobacco. I notice the sweet oak flavors and the 15% alcohol content. The wine ages in barrique for 24 months, with 20% new oak. However, that bigger aromatic profile is adequately matched to the wine's medium-plus texture. This is a release of 1,400 bottles."

"The 2020 Barolo Cannubi is all class. Floral, soaring aromatics meld into a core of dark, red-toned fruit. Medium in body and nuanced, with plenty of youthful tannin, the 2020 sizzles with energy and all the classicism that is such a signature of this site, all amplified by an approach at Altare today that marries textural richness with vibrancy. Today, the Cannubi is the most reticent of the 2020 Altare Barolos‡probably a good sign for its future."

"The Elio Altare 2020 Barolo Cannubi takes a modernist approach to the MGA with some oak spice, tar and licorice that surrounds firm, crisp cherry and red fruit. There is a combination of fruit and oak spice that gives this wine staying power, texture and lift and then folds over the palate with richness and pretty volume. It ages in barrique for 24 months with 20% new oak. A mere 1,400 bottles were created."

"Plum, cherry, sandalwood, vanilla and toasty oak flavors meld into the rich texture of this mellow red. Broad on the palate, with terrific balance and a lingering aftertaste of fruit and sweet spices. Leaves you with a burst of black pepper. Best from 2028 through 2045. —B.S."

"Lots of crushed stone, hints of salted caramel, and fresh flowers. Some crab apple and cranberries. Medium-bodied with plenty of tannins, but not aggressive. Rough velvet. Give this time. Better after 2028."

"The 2019 Barolo Cannubi shows why this site is so magical. It offers all the suppleness that Cannubi is so known for, but married to the natural tension of the year. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, cinnamon, blood orange and mint open nicely in the glass. With its gorgeous inner perfume and total sensuality, the Cannubi is an absolute winner."

"Leasing land in Cannubi is very tricky and competitive. "It's a lottery," Silvia Altare tells me in her La Morra tasting room. Her lease on Cannubi is expiring this year (2023), and when I spoke to her, she was negotiating a 15-year renewal. With only 2,500 bottles released from three barrels (the first vintage from Cannubi was 2011), this is a gorgeous interpretation of Nebbiolo. The Elio Altare 2019 Barolo Cannubi is slender in form but rich and long lasting on the palate. The wine reveals tones of wild berry, crushed rose and exotic spice."

"Cherry and menthol are the main themes in this elegant red, with plum, iron, spice and tobacco notes adding detail. This is balanced, with a lingering, juicy finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. ‡B.S."

"Lustrous mid ruby. Perfumed and almost a little exotic and very fine. Complex, super inviting and with a whisper of oak, but still holding back a little. A thick layer of fine tannins over fresh raspberry fruit. Such fine but powerful tannins! Amazing length. (WS)Drink 2026 † 2040"
