"Firm and structured with dark berries and raspberries as well as cherry character, chocolate and smoky oak. Medium-bodied, this has solid structure and an intense finish. From organically grown grapes. Needs three or four years to soften and open."

"Gemini hails from a single plot of 25-year-old vines sitting at 400 metres above sea level on a mix of clay and sandy marls. Fermented and refined in 70-hectolitre truncated cone vats, the 2019 is über-clean, allowing its charismatic personality to shine. Penetrating floral scents are joined by rosemary and a suggestion of ground rocks, and the palate is awash with dark raspberry, pomegranate and a dollop of liquorice. A sleek and satisfying package, this is impeccably balanced by a firm spine of chocolaty tannins and brisk acidity."

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva takes its time in the glass. This features an array of sweet spice, pipe tobacco and minty herbs elevating dried strawberry notes. It's soothingly round and pliant, with fresh acidity and masses of vibrant black cherry fruit and brilliant acidity that maintains a fantastic balance. A web of crisp tannins defines the finish, which is youthfully structured and long. It tapers off with a tart cranberry concentration and hints of bitter clove."

"Black cherry and blackberry fruit is underscored by a dense layer of tannins in this robust, beefy red. Iron, tar, licorice and menthol notes add complexity as the vivid acidity drives this to its long conclusion. The tannins dominate the finish for now yet aren't overly astringent. Still, this is on the burly side. Best from 2028 through 2043. 800 cases made, 200 cases imported."

"This expressive red delivers aromas and flavors of cherry, currant, mushroom, eucalyptus, iron, sanguine and smoky autumn woods. Firm, with a line of drying tannins, this stays persistent, just leaning to the tannic side in the balance. Shows terrific potential. Best from 2026 through 2042. "B.S."

"Features flavors of macerated plum and blackberry framed by leather, almond, iron and tobacco. Boasts lively acidity, with fine balance overall as the dense, dusty tannins give way to ripe fruit in the end. Best from 2025 through 2042. ‡B.S."

"Very good, bright red. Sexy nose suggests floral red cherry, raspberry, herbs, and sandalwood. Silky-sweet and fine-grained, with an enticing sappy quality to the sweet, ripe, juicy saline red fruit flavours. Nicely tactile and concentrated but lively too, closing with suave tannins, a note of candied raspberry and enticing perfume. Much fruitier and more charming than the classic 2019 Brunello from La Serena. Drinking window: 2030-2040."

"A burst of autumnal spices, cocoa and dried black cherries form a seductive bouquet as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gemini opens in the glass. This is velvety smooth yet lifted in feel, with a textural wave of ripe red and blue fruits swirling across a vibrant acidity stream. It finishes with admirable length and a pleasantly chewy sensation, tannic yet not severe, as hints of steeped plum slowly taper off. A lovely balance here should carry the 2018 Gemini in the cellar for up to a decade."

"Dark and brooding, the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gemini smolders up with rich plum sauce, grilled herbs and mint nuances. This is surprisingly energetic and built on purity, with a rush of tart wild berry fruits and saline minerals elevated by vibrant acidity. Edgy tannins assault the palate, making for a structured finale, yet the 2017 maintains its vibrancy well. Licorice and lavender notes soothe the senses on the finish. The Riserva Gemini maintains a beautiful balance despite the vintage conditions."

"Gemini references twin brothers, Andrea and Marcello Mantengoli who took over La Serena from their father, Ennio. Crafted from a parcel planted in 1993 surrounding the estate, the 2018 shows garnet tints and tertiary nuances; this is mature, but not spent. A bouquet of tobacco, cocoa, dried tarragon and fennel holds promise. Generously fruited, particularly for the vintage, the palate becomes progressively earthier, bringing in leather and game nuances. Heat mounts on the back end, as does a touch of dryness to the tannins."
