ST. GEORGE SPIRITS “BALLER” SINGLE MALT WHISKEY NV

Top Whiskey Picks to Raise Your Holiday Spirits
  • Japanese whisky-inspired American single malt whiskey produced by St. George Spirits in Alameda, California
  • 100% American barley, predominantly two-row pale malted barley combined with lightly roasted barley
  • Distilled in copper pot stills
  • Aged a minimum 4 years; non-age statement
  • Aged 3–4 years in ex-bourbon and French oak wine casks, filtered through maple charcoal, then finished in casks that previously held St. George-produced umeshu made with California-grown ume fruit
  • Aromas of stone fruit, toasty malt, and purple flowers lead to a crisp palate with puffed-grain cereal, toasted almond, and a hint of lychee, finishing with a touch of sweet plum and lingering smoke
  • 47% ABV
Baller was created with whiskey highballs in mind (hence the name). Also recommended in place of Scotch in a Bobby Burns or Rob Roy, or in any whiskey cocktail that calls for a crisp, smoky touch. The label re-imagines the legend of St. George as a samurai. The art on the front label was inspired by an original watercolor. The calligraphy was done by Eri Takase of Takase Studios. Master distiller Lance Winters is responsible for the art direction. Crisp and dry, with a touch of malt sweetness, a hint of lychee and nutty almond character, and a lingering smoky finish.

ST. GEORGE SPIRITS SINGLE MALT WHISKEY

Single Malt Whiskey, St. George
  •  Limited release American single malt whiskey produced by St. George Spirits in Alameda, California
  • 100% malted barley; a combination of two-row barley varieties roasted at varying levels and unroasted Bamberg malt smoked over beech and alder wood
  • Distilled in copper pot stills
  • Lot 24 aged 5-and-a-half to 11-and-a-half years; non-age statement
  • Aged in a combination of 25 casks including ex-bourbon barrels from Kentucky and Tennessee, apple brandy barrels, rum casks, and casks that previously held torrontés, tannat, port, and California sauternes-style wine
  • Aromas of orange, pastry, cocoa powder, and hints of cola lead to brown butter, spice cake, and more cocoa on the palate with toasted marshmallow and bright smoke on the finish
  • 43% ABV

St. George Single Malt Whiskey is an American original: distilled, aged, and blended out of love for what a handcrafted single malt can be. Making a truly unique single malt is what compelled master distiller Lance Winters to start distilling in the first place in the 1990s, and what earned him a spot in the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame. For Lot 24, we selected and blended 25 diverse casks from our whiskey library, including Kentucky and Tennessee bourbon barrels, apple brandy barrels, rum casks, and Torrontés, Tannat, Port, and California Sauternes-style wine casks. Lot 24’s youngest barrel is five and a half years old, while its oldest is eleven and a half years old. Lot 24 also includes blends with whiskies dating back 20 years. St. George Single Malt Whiskey is an elegant expression of everything that we love about whiskey. The nose of Lot 24 opens with aromas of warm orange, gradually moving to pastry and cocoa powder, with hints of cola. On the palate: brown butter, spice cake, more cocoa, and toasted marshmallow take the lead, with bright smoke on the finish.

  • Non-chill filtered; 50% ABV
Founded in 2014, with their first barrels laid down in 2016, Castle & Key has arrived at the enviable point in their evolution where they can consistently release age-stated core expressions. Following in the footsteps of their small batch straight and wheated bourbons, the Restoration Rye is now produced according to a consistent regimen, complemented by a very respectable five-year age statement. What hasn’t changed is the whiskey’s competitive price, matched by a flavor profile that’s brimming with the nuance and spice worthy of a top-shelf sipper.

CASTLE & KEY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY, ‘SMALL BATCH’

Straight Bourbon Whiskey Small Batch

  • Non-chill filtered; 50.5% ABV
This release marks a new chapter in the evolution of Castle & Key whiskey craft. Rather than blending the best expression of a small pod of barrels, this whiskey aims for a consistent regimen, locking in flavor and proof, now highlighted by a six-year age statement. At a glance, this is an armchair whiskey—given its luxurious portion of malted barley and modest char—but this bourbon sports enough rye spice and proof structure to make it an intuitive pick for your next dealer’s choice cocktail.

Our favorite felines are back in the next iteration of Mars’s charming and popular Lucky Cat series. Honoring two cats we’ve previously seen grace a label (but never together), this “Double Individuals” blend features May, a twenty-year-old cat represented by rich sherry maturity, and Hana, nearly half May’s age, whose gregariousness is represented by elegant port wine influence. The two energies combine to create a lavish whisky evocative of cats napping peacefully in their favorite sun-splashed room.
