"The 2023 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru was from the first vines to be picked on September 6, fully destemmed with 30% new oak. One of the most mineral-driven cuvées from Clerget, this is very fragrant and detailed on the nose with hints of incense emerging slowly. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins. The stems impart a subtle white pepper note, nicely structured with impressive purity and length on the finish. There are few Volnays better than this in 2023."

"The 2020 Volnay Clos de Verseuil 1er Cru has a hefty reduction on the nose to the point where, at least initially, I am not convinced it will dislodge with aeration. Yet, returning to my glass after 15 minutes, the fruit is emerging: cranberry and pomegranate, blood orange and cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, fleshy and ripe, with moderate acidity and an opulent, clean finish. Like other Volnays, you can criticize this for lacking typicité and Pinoté, though it has a little more class than others in this flight. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting."
