Boldness is the byword for Meikle Tòir’s aptly named Turbo expression, in which every flavor variable seems cranked to 11. Fermentation times are stretched to an unheard-of 160 hours; the measure of mainland peat, amplified by distiller’s cuts that separate the heart of the heart of the run, tops 72 parts per million; and it’s all wrapped up in a 5-year age statement that could portend brashness rather than refinement. The result, however, is an amplified but elegant expression of the classic Scotch interplay between fruit and smoke. Neither sherry bomb nor peat monster, it’s a charmingly emphatic whisky that finds its comfortable middle by exemplifying the best qualities of these extremes. Imagine a fruit tart that was baked in the coals—a beguiling sipper brimming with the mastery of craft.
