One of the oldest legal whisky-making sites in Scotland (originally named Aldour and changed in 1825), Blair Athol found its mission in blends, becoming first a part of the Peter Mckenzie blending house in 1896 and eventually the principal ingredient in Bell’s blended whisky (the most popular brand of blended whisky in the UK in the 1970s). Absorbed by Diageo in the late 1980s (a 12-year, age-stated expression has been released by Diageo as a part of the Flora & Fauna series), Blair Athol produces a spirit that is nutty and spicy in character, and though it often goes into ex-bourbon casks, it has the heft and burliness to flourish in ex-sherry, as it does in this bottling.
