The story behind the newest Greek producer in our portfolio is anything but new.

Monemvasia Winery, located in southern Lakonia, takes its name from both the historic city and the grape variety that once stood at the heart of ancient Greek trade. For centuries, Monemvasia was primarily vinified as a sweet wine (known as Malvasia) crafted to withstand long sea voyages. But Ottoman occupation brought this tradition to a halt, decimating vineyards across the mainland. The few surviving vines clung to life on the Cycladic islands, scattered and nearly forgotten.

In the late ’90s, the Tsibidis family began the painstaking work of reviving these nearly extinct vines on their ancestral land. By 2010, the establishment of the Monemvasia–Malvasia PDO had officially restored the grape to its historical stature.

The winery today produces a range of styles including the entry-level Voltes line, an elegant red Limniona, a classic Assyrtiko, a dry expression of Monemvasia, and of course, one of the great unsung examples of sweet Monemvasia-Malvasia in contemporary Greece.
