Hermann J Wiemer Vineyard

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard has been a pioneer in viticulture and winemaking in the Finger Lakes, setting a regional benchmark for quality in both their process and their wines. With a focus on agricultural innovation, they emphasize biodiversity, fostering a healthy ecosystem in the vineyard and adhere to minimal intervention in the winery, resulting in wines that are distinctive to both Hermann J. Wiemer and the Finger Lakes.

Their journey toward biodynamic practices began in 2003 with the elimination of herbicides and synthetic inputs, introduction of cover crops, and use of organic fertilizers. Native yeast fermentations further enhanced this natural approach. By 2023, the winery completed Demeter Certification for its 33-acre biodynamic site, underscoring its commitment to sustainability.

Founder Hermann Wiemer, born in Bernkastel, Germany, inherited centuries of winemaking expertise from his family. His father restored Mosel vines post-WWII, and Hermann mastered grafting techniques before studying at prestigious German viticultural institutions. Upon moving to New York in the 1960s, Hermann recognized similarities between Seneca Lake’s climate and soils and those of the Mosel. In 1976, he planted one of the region’s first successful vinifera vineyards, establishing himself as a leader in domestic Riesling production.

Since 2007, the winery has been led by Hermann’s apprentice Fred Merwarth and agronomist Oskar Bynke. Fred focuses on vineyard management and winemaking, while Oskar oversees the business operations. Together, they continue Hermann’s legacy while advancing sustainable practices.

The estate spans multiple vineyards along Seneca Lake’s western and eastern shores. Each site offers unique microclimates and soil profiles that contribute to the winery’s renowned Rieslings, Cabernet Francs, sparkling wines, and single-vineyard selections. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard remains one of the most celebrated wineries in the US for crafting quality wines that reflect a true cool climate terroir and has received the Top 100 Wineries of the year award from Wine & Spirits twelve times, and has been awarded Top 100 Wines from Wine Spectator two times plus a “Winemaker of the year” award from Wine Enthusiast.
