• Deep polished copper in the glass, this whisky opens with warm notes of pecan pie, Muscovado sugar, damp earth, whole wheat bread, and orange zest, accented with a hint of barrel. These darker notes continue on the palate: Damp earth, more pecan pie, and charred oak lead to toasted hazelnuts and toffee. Peppery notes—plus cocoa powder and roasted coffee beans—highlight a long, comforting finish.

Situated on the banks of the River Lossie near Elgin in Speyside, Linkwood was founded in 1821 and began distilling in 1825. Now a formidable presence in the Diageo portfolio (more than 3.5 million liters of spirit are produced each year, the overwhelming majority of which is destined for Johnnie Walker Black and other Diageo blends), Linkwood’s rare appearance as a portfolio release (Diageo offers a 12-year Flora and Fauna expression), has been only modestly bolstered by independent bottlers. Nonetheless, a respectable cult reputation has sprung up, based on the distillery’s approachably light and fruity (but textured) Speyside character, in this case treated to a respectable “extra” 4 years in a first-fill Oloroso sherry hogshead.
