"Dark and brooding, the 2023 Etna Rosso Guardiola slowly emerges with a whiff of crushed rocks and ash, giving way to fresher notes of rose petals, lavender and sour cherries. Silken in feel and surprisingly energetic within, it splashes across the palate with perfumed red and black fruits underscored by classic Guardiola minerality. Pleasantly chewy and exceptionally long, the 2023 finishes with crunchy tannins and a tinge of licorice, leaving the palate reeling with depth and concentration. This is deceivingly open today, yet it has the power and balance for extended cellaring."

"The beautiful, perfumed nature of this wine is so seductive with medium body and superfine, almost endless tannins. So drinkable but even better in two or three years."

"Now after a year in bottle, the 2022 Etna Rosso Guardiola displays a captivating bouquet of dusty rose, incense, dried strawberry, sweet spice and violet candy. It sweeps across the palate with textures of pure silk yet remains lifted and energetic. Layers of ripe red and blue fruits saturate, interwoven with tactile mineral tones and a tinge of sour citrus and dark chocolate. Dramatically long and intense, the 2022 tapers off with youthful tension and fine-grained tannins, leaving behind a lingering floral resonance. This seductive and opulent Guardiola showcases exceptional balance."

"Of all the estate's cru offerings, this is the one with the highest altitude, 900-1,000m above sea level where the lean soils are composed of volcanic sand, rubble and a small amount of ash. Guardiola is almost always closed and austere in its youth and the 2022 is no exception. It opens with aromas of French oak, camphor and dark spice that on the palate become licorice, coconut, menthol, Morello cherry and flinty mineral. Rather grainy tannins and an acidic backbone need time to fully integrate, but this shows very good aging potential. Drink 2028–2037. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O'Keefe July 2024"

"Guardiola, adjacent to Santo Stefano but higher up the slope, hitting the limit of 1,000m stipulated by the DOC, produced Terre Nere's first wine back in 2002. It was also the first Etna red to include the name of a contrada on the label, and the first to be bottled in a Burgundy-style bottle; an important wine in laying out the direction Etna wines were to go in the following years. After 14 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux, the wine finishes for one month in stainless steel before bottling. Delicate earth, cocoa, spice and dark berry aromas lead to a super-precise, chalky textured palate of wild strawberry, raspberry, wood and spices supported by featherweight yet sturdy tannins and high acidity. Stony on the mid-palate and long in length, this should fill out with age and those lovely wild fruits will gain in succulence."
