Bedrock Wine Co. Joins the Skurnik Portfolio in California

We are thrilled to announce that Bedrock Wine Co., a beacon of California’s winemaking heritage, is now distributed through Skurnik Wines & Spirits. While Bedrock has garnered acclaim nationwide, this marks an exciting new chapter for their distribution partnership with Skurnik Wines & Spirits in California.

Founded in 2007 by Morgan Twain-Peterson, MW, and joined shortly thereafter by partner Chris Cottrell, Bedrock Wine Co. was built on a mission to protect and revitalize California’s old-vine vineyards—many of which date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With deep roots in the wine world (Morgan is the son of Joel Peterson of Ravenswood), Bedrock has grown from humble beginnings in a converted chicken coop into one of the most compelling and historically focused wineries in the United States.

A Legacy Rooted in History

At the center of the winery’s story is the Bedrock Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, originally planted in 1854. Morgan acquired this site in 2005, and it remains the beating heart of the project. Bedrock Vineyard is a classic California field blend, with a foundation of Zinfandel interplanted with Mourvèdre, Carignan, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and over 30 additional varieties—many of which are rarely seen outside of these heritage sites.

What makes Bedrock’s vineyard holdings so distinctive is not only their age, but also the diversity and complexity of vine material. In these old, interplanted vineyards, each vine contributes to a deeper, more layered final wine, reflecting a historic approach to viticulture that predates the era of varietal monoculture. These ancient vineyards are dry-farmed, head-trained, and planted on their own roots, resulting in low yields, deep concentration, and naturally balanced fruit.

Regenerative Farming & Site Stewardship

Preservation alone isn’t enough. At Bedrock, the team goes further by actively rehabilitating, replanting, and regenerating old vine sites across California. In the vineyard, they use a regenerative and organic farming approach focused on vine health, soil vitality, and long-term sustainability. Cover cropping, composting, and avoidance of synthetic inputs are central practices.

Bedrock is a participant in the California Land Stewardship Institute’s Fish Friendly Farming program, and in some sites, they’ve employed no-till viticulture to maintain soil structure and encourage microbiological activity. Their vineyard team pays close attention to vine age, spacing, site exposure, and clonal material—farming with the intent to honor each site’s history while improving vine longevity and resilience.

Their work at sites like Evangelho Vineyard in Contra Costa County—own-rooted vines planted in the 1890s on deep, sandy soils near the Delta—is emblematic of their approach: blending careful conservation with a pragmatic eye toward the future of California winegrowing.

A Pragmatic, Minimalist Winemaking Approach

While Morgan and Chris are philosophical about wine, their cellar work is anything but dogmatic. Bedrock’s wines are made with a light but deliberate touch—focused on transparency, freshness, and authenticity.

Fermentations are uninoculated. Malolactic conversion also occurs naturally, and fermentations often include a portion of whole clusters, depending on the vintage and varietal. Bedrock uses a mix of neutral barrels, large format foudres, and demi-muids, and cigars, all depending on the cuvée, allowing fruit character and site expression to remain front and center. The goal is to craft wines that are grounded in their vineyard origins, structured for aging but also expressive and drinkable in their youth.
