Willett’s Single Barrel Family Estate Bourbon elicits excitement the world over, each bottling highly prized for its limited nature and indisputable quality. So imagine the buzz when the distillery announced the debut of a small batch bourbon, bottled under the Family Estate label, but vatted 50 barrels at a time for a more widely available release. For this expression, Master Distiller Drew Kulsveen blends the family’s original bourbon mash bill with a small proportion of high-rye bourbon, and—as is done with the single barrel Family Estate—bottles at cask strength.

"Much was expected of this release " if not a lot of trepidation " and it delivers. From the first line of small batch releases to receive the œpurple top” packaging designation once given to the brand™s most elite (and sourced) single barrels. This is from Willett's own four-year-old distillate blended from two mashbills and around 50 barrels then bottled at barrel proof, 62.5 percent ABV in this case. It™s spicy and herbal on the nose, a bit dank even with a palate of caramel corn, espresso, and sourdough bread. With a rich and creamy mouthfeel, the finish is a bit grainy, betraying its youth. Longtime Willett stans might be disappointed, but the open-minded will find much to admire."
