While actively experimenting with a range of casks to finish its whiskies, Tenmile typically matures its spirit in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks of varying sizes—a popular industry combination. But the West Point release goes all in on 53-gallon ex-bourbon, and the distillery views it as a benchmark expression, one worthy of celebrating what was first a famous Revolutionary-era fort and later, America’s first military academy. Worth noting in the label design is the chain border that signifies “the Great Chain,” a navigational roadblock that meant to prevent the British fleet from sailing through the critical S-turn in the Hudson where West Point—and its strategically placed batteries of cannon—were located. The Great Chain—remnants of which can still be seen on either side of the river—was celebrated in the first Tenmile release in the Revolutionary Series.
