Tasting Notes

Logoche, Miahuatlán, is fast becoming an internationally revered distilling community within the mezcal world. Among the most iconic distillers in Logoche are Hermogenes García Vasquez, Paula Aquino Sanchez, and their son Jorge, who work together to produce just around 1500 liters of mezcal per year. The exceptional quality of their spirits clearly reflects the sensitivity and passion with which they work—truly a privilege to experience. Hermogenes himself is known to wax poetic about the flavors and aromas he experiences in each individual batch.

In general, the district of Miahuatlán and neighboring Ejutla are widely revered for the quality and (relative) abundance of the rare Agave karwinskii species, which grows wild across Oaxaca’s southern Sierra Sur mountain range, in all its numerous forms and sizes. Having the opportunity to taste an example of this rare and delightful agave species, distilled by one of Oaxacan mezcal’s living legends, is a treat for mezcal newcomers and longtime agave heads alike; Madrecuishe from Hermogenes and family is a bottle to covet for years to come (if you can make it last that long…)
