Whisky, 'Tsunuki Bakemono #08 - Single Cask 5093 - Hajikaki'

Whisky Tsunuki Bakemono 08 Single Cask 5093 Hajikaki
  • Limited edition single cask single malt Japanese whisky produced by Mars Whisky
  • The 8th release in the Mars Bakemono series, which highlights illustrations from the famous Bakemono Zukushi “Monster” Scroll, an illustrated text (emaki) from Japan’s Edo Period (17th–19th centuries) by an unknown artist featuring various yōkai (magical creatures from Japanese folklore)
  • Distilled at Mars Tsunuki in Kagoshima and matured entirely at Mars Komagatake (fka Mars Shinshu) in Nagano; Cask #5093
  • 100% unpeated malted barley twice distilled in copper pot stills
  • Aged 5 years and 5 months in an ex-bourbon barrel; distilled in January 2020 and bottled in June 2025
  • Non-chill filtered; 61% ABV

The eighth release in Mar’s Bakemono series depicts Hajikaki, a pale-white, squat and blob-like ghost that is thought to have died from their own shame. Depicted with their short arms covering their head in embarrassment, Hajikaki—and the Chinese spirits they evolved from—are considered shy and best avoided. But consider the whisky this little yōkai accompanies liquid courage: Distilled in the robust house style of Mars’s youngest whisky distillery in Kagoshima, the new make was then sent to age in a single cask in the galvanizing high altitude and profound temperature fluctuations of the Komagatake Distillery in Nagano.
