Lorcher Pfaffenwies:
This Grand Cru vineyard is the only one in Theresa’s collection not in her home or directly neighboring villages. Lorch is around a dramatic northern facing bend in the Rheingau River and while only 13 kilometers away, it feels like a different world. The village itself is small and sleepy but the steep vineyards are imposing and impressive. First recorded in 1211 as ‘Pafenwies’ and later in 1235 as ‘Paffenwissen’, the vineyard was named the Pfarrer (Priest) Dydo, the son of Knight Nikolaus von Scharfenstein. At its steepest point, the vineyard is at a 45 degree angel with soils made up of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite soils with deep loess in the lower slopes.
