Rolling Fork’s Fortuitous Union was initially born of an accident which saw aged rum unintentionally vatted with rye whiskey and has since become one of their flagship releases. This small batch vatting consists of a 3:1 ratio of toasted bourbon to wheated bourbon finishing casks, resulting in a blend of unbelievable power and complexity.

Tasting Notes

Fortuitous Union is a blend of Caribbean rum and Indiana whiskey produced by Rolling Fork Spirits in Starlight, Indiana. Rums in the blend include column and pot still single blended rum distilled from molasses by Foursquare Distillery in Barbados, pot still rum distilled from molasses by an undisclosed distillery in Jamaica, and column distilled rum distilled from molasses by an undisclosed distillery in the Dominican Republic. All three rums were tropically aged in their respective countries of origin for 4 years in ex-bourbon barrels.

Meanwhile, the whiskey was distilled by MGP in Indiana, from a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, and aged 6 years in ex-bourbon barrels. These spirits, each individually impressive, were blended at a ratio of 85% rum and 15% rye and rested for 3 days in stainless steel. From there, the blend was vatted in ex-wheated bourbon and toasted bourbon casks for an additional 20 months of aging in Rolling Fork’s Starlight, IN, rickhouse. Finally, the two finishes were blended at a 3:1 ratio of toasted bourbon to wheated bourbon finishing casks to craft this small batch release.

Aromas of strawberry jam, nutmeg, grilled pineapple, and wet limestone transition to charred marshmallow, elderflower, black tea, and apricot on the palate. Cinnamon, lychee, and Mandarin orange round out the long finish. Non-chill filtered; bottled at a cask strength of 55.3% ABV.
