"The Estate Argyros 2022 Santorini Assyrtiko Cuvee Gerontampelo takes Assyrtiko in a richer and more oak-influenced direction. Sourced from ungrafted vines aged 180 to 200 years in Pyrgos, Megalochori and Episkopi, the wine opens to aromas of butter, cream, oak spice and underripe stone fruit layered over a firm mineral core. The palate is dense and textured, with notes of freshly churned butter, citrus and orchard fruit supported by impressive concentration and length. A full year in French oak followed by an additional year on the lees in stainless steel gives the wine a polished, international style that emphasizes richness and texture as much as minerality. Rooted in Santorini's volcanic soils and traditional dry-farmed kouloura vineyards, the wine remains beautifully composed despite its textural weight. Produced in 12,000 bottles and bottled at 15% alcohol, it is a powerful and ambitious expression, although I am ultimately partial to the greater tension and precision of the estate's Cuvee Evdemon."

"This is the inaugural vintage of a new wine presented by Estate Argyros. The 2020 Santorini Assyrtiko Cuvee Gerontampelo is the barrel-aged white, and the philosophy is somewhat adjacent to a Nykteri (without the oxidation). The name"

"The barrel-fermented 2020 Santorini Cuvée Gerontampelo rises from the glass with prominent lime skin, smoky stone dust, pastry and subtle grapefruit. Full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, the 2020 is a serious Cuvée Gerontampelo with definition on the expansive finale."

"Smoked almonds, apricot stones, cardamom pods, grapefruit, mangoes and cloves on the nose of this rich and full-bodied white. Hints of salted caramel, too. It™s layered, concentrated and buttery in texture, supported by bright acidity. Long and intense. Drink or hold."

"Tasted blind. This is in a funny place right now, not young enough to revel in its power and not old enough to be showing much detail. But all the parts are there: steely, clenching acidity; a broad, firm texture filled with saline stoniness, dense with extract. It's beginning to take on some mature notes, and there's a pleasant scent of the scrub that grows between the stones on the island, but this needs patience. Check in on it in another 2 years. (TQT)"
