Pinot Noir 'Elgin'

Pinot Noir 'Elgin'

Pinot Noir Elgin
  • 100% Pinot Noir
  • A 3.12HA densely planted vineyard, located on a ridge of ancient clay-rich Bokkeveld shale, made up of 5 blocks
  • Dijon clones 667 and 777
  • The five blocks were hand harvested in different tranches for optimum ripeness
  • All grapes were destemmed and gravity fed to tulip-shaped Italian concrete vessels to ensure whole berry fermentation
  • To capture the elegance of the fruit, and avoid excessive extraction, the wine spent just 10 days on skins, with relatively short pump-overs twice per day
  • Spontaneous fermentation with minimal extraction
  • Malolactic conversion occurred spontaneously in a combination of 2000-litre conical-shaped Austrian oak foudre and 300-litre Burgundian oak barrels, 25% new, with lees contact for eleven months of maturation

"The Moya Meaker 2023 Elgin Pinot Noir is a delightful wine that opens to a medium-dark appearance and subtle aromas at first. The bouquet shows floral background notes and fruit tones of tightly concentrated blackcurrant. With time, the floral notes blossom to show increasingly expressive violet and lilac. The most interesting part, however, are the metallic notes of iron ore or rusty nail from Bokkeveld shale soils. This wine ferments in concrete tanks and matures in 300-liter barrels. Production is 11,369 bottles."

"A crisp, fresh and pure pinot noir that has cranberry, redcurrant and orange aromas. It's medium-bodied, superclean and bright. Drink now."

"The 2023 Pinot Noir Elgin comes from vines on Bokkeveld shale, fermented with whole berries but not whole clusters to avoid pepperiness. It matured in 20% new Burgundian barrels for 11 months. This is perhaps a step up from the 2022 last year. There,s more complexity andÿsous-boisÿcharacteristics on the nose, with vivacious red berry fruit, briar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid red fruit and good structure. Gently grippy, this might just miss a bit of finesse and persistence, but it has the substance to merit aging in bottle."

"Transparent garnet. Vegy nose but not to excess and really rather appetising sweet, but not superficial, fruit. Then light, dry tannins on the end. Nice! Such good balance I was tempted to swallow this. GV"
