Destilado de Agave, Papalote, 'Eufemio Sanchez'

Destilado de Agave Papalote Eufemio Sanchez
  • Destilado de agave produced in El Peral, Guerrero
  • Maestro Mezcalero Eufemio Sanchez
  • Produced from 100% Papalote (Agave cupreata)
  • Cooked in an earthen pit oven
  • Crushed using a wooden mallet (mazo de madera)
  • Fermented in white pine (ayacahuite) tanks using spring water
  • Distilled twice using traditional copper pot stills
  • An earthy, citrusy nose with notes of cucumber skin and wet straw transitions to a sharp palate of jasmine, plantain, orange rind, cinnamon bark, and papaya, which continues to float above an extended finish full of earth and minerality
  • 200 liters produced in May 2023
  • 47% ABV

This is a slightly funkier, more brash expression of Papalote than we often see from the Sanzekan collective—perhaps reflective of its maker, Eufemio Sanchez, one of the youngest and newest members of the group. More reminiscent of Papalometl (A. potatorum) in the Mixteca Alta in Oaxaca than the nearby mountains of Guerrero, this batch is a brilliant example of the breadth of flavors possible from A. cupreata and its cousins.

"There's some immediate drinker's dissonance between the rail liquor-quality packaging (complete with an Everclear-typical flow restrictor!) and the luxury price tag. Then you try this destilado de agave from a Guerrero-based cooperative and produced from their local Papalote - and wow. Earthen pit, wooden mallet, pine tanks, copper pots, yada yada yada. It's earthy and a bit funky on the nose like fresh sourdough, while the palate offers pico del gallo, hay, potpourri, and some cinnamon sugar. A unique beast, and completely delicious. One of the best of this tasting and a good reminder that there is still great mezcal out there not yet corrupted by American-style packaging and marketing."
