'1896' Riesling

'1896' Riesling

1896 Riesling

Variety: Riesling • Region: Mosel • Vineyard: Longuicher Maximin Herrenberg – planted in 1896 • Soil Type: Red slate • Fermentation & Élevage: Direct press, no maceration, natural fermentation in stainless steel

This is the most traditional wine of the estate; the grapes are carefully carried to the base of the vineyard where they are immediately crushed by foot. After the foot crushing, the grapes/must are brought to the estate where everything goes into a traditional vertical press. After the press, the juice goes directly into barrel without sedimentation for spontaneous fermentation. Once fermentation stops, regardless of where the RS is, the wine is done. Not only is this the most traditional way of making wine in the region, it’s the most “low intervention” wine you’ll find that shows the incredible depth that only old vines can offer. There is only ever a single barrel made.

Maximin Herrenberg is a south-facing vineyard with red slate, a soil structure that is relatively rare in the Mosel.

Before the turn of the 20th century, Carl Schmitt-Wagner decided to replant the most special parcel of the Maximum Herrenberg vineyard using a massale selection from the very best material he had at that time. The Prussian tax map of 1868 had already designated Maximum Herrenberg as a top site in the region at that time. Using the Roman, single-pole training system, the vineyard was planted with a density of 10,000 vines per hectare.

When the Schmitt-Wagner estate was unsuccessful in convincing one of their heirs to take over this significant and historic domaine, Karl-Joseph Loewen was able, over time, to convince them that the Loewen family would honor the history of the vineyard. At the conclusion of the purchase, the Carl Loewen estate was now the proud owner of 9000 vines that had been planted between 1896-1910, with the crown Jewel, Herrenberg, being the oldest Riesling vineyard in the world.

Tasting wines from these parcels is like participating in a “living monument of viticultural history”.

"#34 Top 100 Wines of Germany 2025: Incredibly deep but also wonderfully delicate, this is a great masterpiece of dry Mosel riesling. Subtle peaches, wildflowers and berries on the nose. And that's just the beginning of a description of this giant of minerality and finesse. Still very young. Vegan. Drink or hold."

"The 2024 Riesling 1896 was made according to historic principles, from ancient vines, without mechanization in the vineyard. It was hand-picked and carried on foot, only basket-pressed on the evening of picking and fermented in Fuder without sedimentation. It fermented spontaneously and was bottled unfiltered. Suppleness and concentration define the palate after a really shy nose hints at wet stone and lemon. The palate has beautiful depth. This is not an obvious wine now. It needs time to unfurl the secrets of the stone slowly. Bone-dry"

"The beauty of this great dry Mosel wine is both overwhelming and seemingly timeless. Unbelievable concentration, yet everything about this wine is fine and precise, so that you wonder how such density and delicacy can coexist. And the brilliance of the finish is the most amazing thing about this great Mosel masterpiece. Vegan. Limited production. Drink or hold."

"The 2023 Riesling 1896 honors the year of planting in its name, with vines in the Maximin Herrenberg that were 127 years old when picked. The grapes were harvested across a spectrum of ripeness, slowly pressed in an old basket press and fermented spontaneously without sedimentation in Fuder. Creamy ripe smooth apple shines with a touch of fennel seed. The palate is clear-cut and bright, with a mouth-filling bold presence but without fat and a luminous citrus echo. This is expansive but precise."

"Extremely complex nose with lemon zest, fresh pineapple and spicy aromas. Just a whiff of caramel. Rich and very concentrated, the palate creamy at the front and silky at the back, making this very easy to drink now. The finish is at once stony and filigree. However, this is still at a very early stage in its life, so writing a long list of adjectives would give entirely the wrong impression of this unique wine. Vegan. Drink or hold."
