"The 2022 Sumoll from Masllorenç, on the border of Penedès and Tarragona, was aged 18 months in chestnut barrels. The nose features chestnut, pure cherry and an earthy underbrush character. The palate is vibrant and juicy with fine, reactive tannins reminiscent of Nebbiolo. Less extracted than the previous vintage, it achieves greater poise and balance. With a few more refinements, Pepe Raventós seems poised to reveal the true heart of this high-acid, characterful variety."

"Sumoll is a native red grape from Catalunya known for its vibrant cherry core, high acidity and structured heavy tannins, but balancing these characteristics is challenging. The 2021 Sumoll offers a unique expression for adventurous consumers. Sourced from Serra de Montmell in Penedès, this purple-hued wine spent a year in chestnut foudres. It delivers herbal, bloody-like aromas along with balsamic notes of thyme and rosemary, contrasted by plum and maraschino cherry. Dry with vigorous tannins, its high acidity (3.0 pH) contributes to a stiff mouthfeel. While it may settle with time, today, it serves more as a statement on native varieties than a wine for casual drinking."

"The 2021 Sumoll is a single-vineyard varietal wine that matured in a 500-liter chestnut barrel for 18 months. It's different from the one produced in 2018 that I tasted back in 2022. This comes from a head-pruned vineyard, called La Plana dels Horts, in Masllorenç at 275 meters above sea level, planted in 1975 on limestone, iron and clay soils. It has 12.3% alcohol, a pH of 2.96 and 8.6 grams of acidity, very high. They have been fine-tuning the work with the grape, which is not easy to work with. They have been inspired by a trip to Piamonte, as they believe the grape is somewhat similar to Nebbiolo. They want a wine to drink now or keep for 10 to 15 years. This wine has a combination of primary and peachy notes and a rustic side too. This is still a work in progress, and 600 bottles were filled in August 2023. The 2019 was never released, as there are only 480 bottles."
