Clay pot, or “ancestral,” mezcal often seems to work wonders with the massive, sugar-laden Agave americana varieties, most of all the beloved Arroqueño. Macurichos produces an especially delightful example, overflowing with confectionary pleasures yet remaining deeply contemplative—and strong enough to demand attention. Not to be missed!

Tasting Notes
Produced by Maestro Mezcalero Rafael Martinez Sernas, in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca. Made from 100% Arroqueño, cooked in an earthen oven, milled using a traditional, stone tahona mill, fermented in wooden vats, and distilled using a traditional, clay pot still.
The nose is soft and alluring, with aromas of caramel and lemon yogurt. The palate is rich and textured, with tons of vanilla and cream, butterscotch and soft cheese. A twang in the midpalate lightens up the experience, adding asparagus and doubling down on the lemon zest, with a vibrant, herbaceous, dryer-sheet funk that makes a pronounced appearance and then vanishes. There is a long finish with the vanilla cream just lingering amid delicate smoke. Really delightful! 55% ABV
