"The 2024 Mataro (Contra Costa County), from vines planted in 1922, is one of the most profound, riveting wines I have tasted from Sandlands. A huge, vertical wine, the 2024 impresses with its energy and power. Black cherry fruit, gravel, incense, tobacco and spice infuse the palate with tremendous flavor and textural intensity. All of this fruit is from Oakley Road Vineyard. What a wine!"

"Though winemaker Tegan Passalacqua doesn't vineyard-designate his wines, this Sandlands Mataro comes entirely from the Oakley Road vineyard, unofficially named by Joel Peterson. The dry-farmed site sits in the windy, sandy Contra Costa delta and delivers a wine that shows power without weight. Lightly floral and saline, followed by notes of tart blackberry, plum skin, dried herbs and earthiness. A mineral thread runs through it, with fine-grained tannins and a light grip carrying a fresh, spicy, long finish. A delicious wine with an unmistakable sense of place."
