Tidings

Tidings

Tidings is the personal project of Napa Valley winemaker Reid Griggs, focused on classically styled, single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons made with restraint, patience, and reverence for site. Produced in small quantities and guided by traditional technique, the wines rely on wild yeasts, careful élevage, and time rather than manipulation. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, Tidings reflects Griggs’ belief that wine is a living thing — and that purity and transparency are earned through thoughtful farming and disciplined cellar work.

Griggs is a first-generation winemaker whose path has taken him through some of the most respected cellars in both California and France. His first vintage was spent in the cellar at Bedrock Wine Co., where exposure to old vines and low-intervention practices shaped his philosophical approach. Time spent in France, including experience at Pierre Gonon in the Northern Rhône, deepened his appreciation for site expression, balance, and classical structure. Back in Napa Valley, he worked with Alex & Graeme MacDonald at MacDonald Vineyards, gaining firsthand insight into one of the region’s iconic Cabernet terroirs, and later held roles at Ridge Vineyards and Dalla Valle that reinforced precision farming and vineyard transparency at the highest level.

Academically grounded, Griggs holds a Master’s degree in Viticulture & Enology from UC Davis, where his research focused on microbial ecology in winegrowing — a scientific foundation that informs his comfort with native fermentations and minimal intervention.

Today, in addition to Tidings, Griggs serves as Winemaker at historic Stony Hill Vineyard on Spring Mountain, stewarding one of Napa Valley’s most storied estates with a commitment to classical proportion and terroir-driven expression. His technical expertise and philosophical alignment with traditional winemaking approaches have also led to him overseeing wine production for Burgess Cellars, where he applies the same principles of balance, restraint, and vineyard fidelity to Napa’s flagship Cabernet programs.

With Tidings, Griggs distills these experiences into Cabernet Sauvignon (& a little bit of Syrah) that is structured yet lifted, powerful yet composed — wines that speak clearly of vineyard, season, and place rather than of the winemaker’s hand.
