Sonbi Gin (Korea)
Launched in 2021, and produced in Chungju, South Korea, Sonbi is the “Western spirits” brand from Tokki Soju, offering premium, typically Western-made spirits with a Korean twist.
Sonbi’s flagship Korean dry gin is crafted to showcase its Korean-grown botanicals, and all Sonbi spirits produced in Chungju carry a Jiyeok-teuksanju (regional specialty liquor) designation—a legal Korean certification similar to the Geographical Indication predominantly used in Europe as quality assurance for traditional alcoholic beverages from a specific region. With the exception of juniper, which cannot grow in Korea, all botanicals such as rice, Schisandra berry, and pine needle come from Chungju and its bordering regions.
Named for the virtuous scholars of the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty who passed up positions of wealth and power to lead lives of integrity in the pursuit of knowledge, Sonbi’s labels are designed to mimic Korean currency in a playful nod to the belief that knowledge and integrity are themselves true wealth.
