Rye is thought of as America’s original grain, and the steel plow, invented by blacksmith John Deere in 1837, was fundamental in helping rye, and the farmers that planted it, flourish as the nation grew. This whiskey pays tribute to the innovation of John Deere’s steel plow with a classic 95/5 rye mash bill that arrives at its mature “sweet spot” via a double dose of aging in hot climates and a finishing touch of charred white oak staves.
