Chenin Blanc 'Plat'bos'

Chenin Blanc 'Plat'bos'

Chenin Blanc Platbos David Nadia Sadie
  • Chenin Blanc
  • Planted right next to Skaliekop on decomposed granite in 1981 on the Paardebosch farm (a tractor road separates the two)
  • David & Nadia have been farming this vineyard since winter 2013 and it has been a pillar in their granite approach towards their white wines
  • Plat’Bos, like with the other two single vineyards, are true to the local dialect of the people from the Siebritskloof whom have been working with this vineyard long before they became involved on the Paardebosch farm. “Plat” means low or flat and “bos” means bush (vines). It refers to the small, low bush vines, true to the mountain and typical of the Swartland dialect
  • Grapes were harvested in the first part of February, being one of the earliest Chenin Blanc vineyards that David & Nadia work with, planted on a northern slope
  • Harvesting took place over 3 picking dates and all lots were fermented and aged separately in old French barrels
  • Plat’bos is one of four of the wines qualifying for the Old Vine Project (OVP) seal

"Based in Swartland, David and Nadia Sadie focus their efforts on organic, old and dry-farmed bushland. Plat, bos, from their single-vineyard range, is 100% Chenin Blanc from a vineyard planted in 1981 and farmed by the pair since late 2013. The grapes are grown on a northfacing slope and this was one of the earliest harvests of Chenin Blanc for the 2021 vintage. Greg Sherwood MW: A fine crystalline example showing complex notes of white peach, juicy acids and a real translucent clarity. A fabulous example of excellence. Beverley Blanning MW: Yellow peaches and flint, good weight of rounded fruit, no heaviness and a distinctly mineral edge. Richness and honeyed notes on the finish, and creamy oak. Roger Jones: Refined, elegant, granite, slate, chalky then creamy. Liquid gold: delicate unwaxed lemon peel, caramelised lime zest, sweet white nuts, lovely purity and a hint of delicate perfume."

"#41 Top 100 Wines of South Africa; A complex nose of grilled lemons, peaches, grapefruit and flint. Medium-bodied with tight structure. Supple and persistent on the palate. Linear with real focus. Subtle and nuanced with subtle spice notes. Tannins keep things structured. Just gorgeous. Drink or hold."

"Bright and mineral with lime candy and lemon meringue aromas, the 2021 Plat'bos Chenin Blanc is illuminated with yellow apple essences in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is electric on the palate, showing an impressive 11% alcohol that sways with finesse and balance. The Chenin continues to grow in amplitude as it ends with a delicate mineral essence and electric energy that is food-friendly. Bravo!"
