Black Estate
Black Estate is a family-owned wine project rooted in the hills of the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury. Founded in 1993 by Russell and Kumiko Black, it is now run by husband-and-wife team Nicholas Brown and Penelope (Pen) Valentine and their family. Drawn to the area’s distinctive soils and cool climate, the couple purchased Black Estate in 2007 with a clear focus on farming, food, and wine that expresses place with honesty and precision.
What began with a single vineyard planted in has grown into three BioGro certified organic and Demeter certified biodynamic sites: Home, Damsteep, and Netherwood. Each offers its own voice through variations in slope, soil, and exposure. The vineyards sit on clay and limestone soils, ideal for producing finely structured, site-driven wines. In the cellar, the approach is deliberately hands-off: wild ferments, minimal additions, and gentle handling allow the vineyards to lead the conversation.
