Vernaccia di Oristano Antico Gregori Contini
  • 100% Vernaccia
  • Vineyard located very few meters above sea level
  • Vineyard has thin, sandy, and infertile soil
  • Vinified traditionally with soft pressing and in controlled temperatures
  • This bottling is only produced in the best vintages for Vernaccia, those that are considered excellent
  • The base from the 1979 vintage was topped up for some years with small percentages of younger Vernaccia, in order to revive the Flor yeasts (in a method similar to the Solera system)
  • 85% 1979 vintage with 15% of a Solera selection from 9 different vintages
  • After extended refinement through oxidation, the wine is then completed with the addition of small quantities of very old Vernaccia, whose base dates back to the earliest decades of the last century

"The 1979 Vernaccia di Oristano Antico Gregori opens with a spicy and decidedly savory bouquet that blends cedar shavings with ginger and dried apple. It's sleek and wiry in feel. Salty minerals and spices further intensify pronounced acidity and tart orchard fruits. This finishes long and staining with a saltwater taffy air and hazelnut hints that slowly fade. Place the Antico Gregori into a category resembling dry Sherry, yet beware of its 18.5% abv."
