Ferdinand’s Tempranillo comes from Ann Kraemer’s Shake Ridge Vineyard in Amador County, at an altitude around 1750’. The rocky vineyard is made up of ancient, red volcanic soils. This ideal location balances easy ripening hot summer days and cool nights from the high elevation. Ann farms with incredible care and precision developed from years growing grapes in Napa. Excellent wines from Shake Ridge are also made by Favia, Keplinger, Gallica, Tribute to Grace, Forlorn Hope, and Dirty and Rowdy.
The fruit was picked early to retain its natural acidity and 100% destemmed to a two-ton stainless steel fermenter. Natural fermentation began after five days and the wine received gentle pump overs twice daily for two weeks. The wine was barreled down dry after 21 days in tank and finished malolactic fermentation in barrel. Then, it is aged for twenty months in 20% new French oak. Racked just twice, the wine received minimal S02 and was not fined or filtered prior to bottling.
