Grapes for the 2016 Mullineux Iron Syrah were sourced from a single parcel of 17-year-old organically-farmed, dry-farmed, bush vines on the rolling iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury. This parcel of Syrah gives the best expression of the “koffieklip” terroir – broadness and mid-palate. Whole bunches are put into open-top 500L French oak barrels and foot stomped to release some juice. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and left on the skins for four weeks, with pigeage once per day. The Syrah is aged twelve months in 500L French oak barrels, 25% new, and then an additional nine months in 2nd fill foudre. 10 months of aging in bottle before release. ABV 13.5%, pH 3.80. 236 cases produced.

"This is intriguing, with a dusting of white pepper out front followed by a notable sanguine streak and a range of red currant, bitter cherry, singed iron and cedar notes. The structure is evident through the pepper-tinged finish, giving this an old-school feel. Best from 2021 through 2026. 152 cases made, 10 cases imported."

"Matured in 25% new French oak for 18 months, the 2016 Iron Syrah delivers more red fruit on the nose than the 2016, offering cranberry, raspberry, pressed flowers and something a little exotic – marmalade and a touch of tangerine. The medium-bodied palate shows a fine bead of acidity and grips the mouth, the whole bunches lending an (appropriately enough) ferrous-like finish. Excellent."
