Syrah 'GRANITE'

Syrah 'GRANITE', Mullineux

Syrah 'GRANITE', Mullineux

Grapes for the 2015 Mullineux Granite Syrah were sourced from a single parcel of sustainably farmed 21-year-old dry-farmed, bush vines grown in the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg.  This is the parcel of Syrah that gives the best expression of this granite terroir – freshness and perfume. Whole bunches are put into open-top 500L French oak barrels and foot stomped to release some juice. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and left on the skins for four weeks, with pigeage once per day. The Syrah is aged twelve months in 500L French oak barrels, 25% new, and then an additional twelve months in 2nd fill foudre. 10 months of aging in bottle before release. ABV 14%, pH 3.69. 236 cases produced.

Tasting Notes

“This violet-perfumed Syrah is the most elegant of our single-terroir Syrahs. The palate is medium to full bodied and delicately spicy, with a silky texture balanced by a fresh, natural acidity. There are notes of black pepper, violets and lilies, red berries and herbs.” –Andrea & Chris Mullineux

"Solidly built, with a racy iron note that frames the core of red currant, damson plum and cherry fruit nicely, letting light tobacco, pepper and sanguine details flitter through the background. Shows some latent grip, so cellar a touch. Best from 2019 through 2025. 230 cases made, 25 cases imported."

"Lots of black plums, dark cherry compote, baking spices, vanilla and resin. Full body and tons of rich dark fruit, but it's so well supported by a stream of fresh acidity and a firm tannin backbone. A long finish. Drink in 2020."
