Review:
The 2018 St. Magdalener Classico is a blend of Schiava with a dollop of Lagrein. An earthy and spicy bouquet of musky blackberry, cherry, sage and white pepper wafts from the glass. There’s an angular feel to its textures, seeming to both soothe and tug at the senses with notes of sour raspberry and minerals, propelled by juicy acidity. The tactile finale promises years of evolution, as grippy tannins slowly emerge after each enjoyable tilt of the glass. Violet florals and a hint of graphite linger on. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then spends five months in large neutral oak casks from 15-45 hectoliters. It really is a beauty.
