The name derives from ancient Romans who with their legions and cavalry passed through this area (Reiter = rider; Pfad = path).
Reiterpfad extends for a considerable distance, just to the east of Deidesheim further into the plain, and the soils are very different: mainly weathered hillside rock, washed-up sand and red sandstone with intermittent beds of marl lime. The exposition is south-east, sloping upward towards the woods with “Mediterranean” climatic conditions. Sandstone walls which reflect the sun and hold the heat on the gentle slope.
