Extra Brut, Hermann J. Wiemer
In 1985 Hermann J. Wiemer produced a wine called “Champagne Naturel.” It was not Champagne, of course, and it wasn’t made from traditional Champagne grape varieties either. No, it was dry Riesling, one of Hermann Wiemer’s early attempts to manufacture a dry Riesling the public would accept.
It took thirty years for Wiemer’s second sparkling Riesling to be produced. The Hermann J. Wiemer “Extra Brut” Sparkling Wine * (Seneca Lake AVA, Finger Lakes, NY, Disgorged March 2018) 2015 is quite bubbly, very dry and relatively austere, with slightly medicinal flavors of quince, lemon, and lees. The world “Riesling” is still not on the front label. But it is on the back — in small print.
