Pinot Noir Oppenlander Vyd The Withers

WINEMAKER NOTES
This gorgeous, high toned Pinot reveals its Pommard clonal heritage and coastal woodland location through a combination of focused dark bing cherry notes and fine grained tannins. Medium bodied and built to age, it also features woodsy and underbrush aromas and flavors with exposure to air, it is reminiscent of its Burgundian brethren.

VINEYARD NOTES Oppenlander Vineyard, planted in 1997 by 5th generation Shandel family members, is under vine to 20 acres and located in Comptche, abutting old growth redwood forests near the Mendocino Coast. Clones harvested include Pommard, 115, and 114and Martini. The site can experience over 50 degree daily swings in temperatures and over 40 inches of rainfall annually, but features extremely well drained soils, all of which produces strong fruit structure and acidity over lengthy ripening seasons.

VINIFICATION AND COOPERAGE Of the 19 barrels used, only 3 were new (Tonnelerie Remond). The remaining cooperage was 1-5 year old Francois Frères barrels. The wine was harvested by hand and fermented with 35% whole clusters and ambient yeasts at cool temperatures after a cold soak. We employed no fining or filtration, and racked only prior to bottling.
