Strub Niersteiner Paterberg Riesling Spätlese

Niersteiner Paterberg is located on the southern part of the village, facing north on limestone soils, making it ideal for producing Spätlese. Crisp, clear and juicy, this is one of our favorite wines from Sebastian.
Today, Sebastian Strub is charge of this excellent domaine in the finest village in Rheinhessen, Nierstein. A majority of the holdings here are on the famous red sandstone slope or ‘Roter Hang’ of the village, but Sebastien also farms two vineyards which are limestone based on the northern face of the village. The low PH and high acidity of the wines from these soils make for perfect off-dry wines. Sebastian worked at some of the top wineries in Germany as well as at Burn Cottage in NZ where he worked with Ted Lemmon and his team, bringing back some ideas about fermentation and vineyard work to the family winery. All ferments here are done “pied de cuve”, which a natural ferment started in glass before the main part of the harvest. “It’s like making a sourdough starter. It gives much more complexity of aroma and flavor” says Sebastian.
