Tasting Notes

For those who thought grain whisky was by default light and creamy, think again. The majority of Compass Box Experimental Grain Whisky is comprised of grains from the Cameronbridge and North British distilleries along with a healthy dose of Compass Box’s Hedonism.

The most notable addition to the blend comes from a younger Loch Lamond whisky with an herbal, moss-like smoke unlike anything Compass Box has used before. Paradoxical spirits are something of a calling card at Loch Lomond Distillery which operates with an open mind, always eager to innovate and push the boundaries of rules and expectations alike. Nearly a third of the whisky in this Experimental Grain blend is Loch Lomond single grain whisky made from peated, malted barley distilled in a copper Coffey still. Despite being 100% malted barley, the use of a column rather than a pot still during distillation means this cannot be classified as a single malt, but it is the perfect spirit around which to build a unique blended grain Scotch whisky.

Lead whisky maker James Saxon has crafted a complex whisky full of contrasts—banana and toffee mingle with savory barbecue smoke and hints of raspberry & molasses. A soft, oily palate of almond and vanilla precedes an herbaceous finish of burnt pinecone. Non-chill filtered with no added coloring; 46% ABV. Limited release of 6,142 bottles.
