Kreuznacher Kahlenberg

First mentioned by name in 1499, the history of the Kahlenberg vineyard is a long and venerable one. It has served for generations as the reference site for the former Royal Prussian Institute of Pomology and Viticulture when making official recommendations to winegrowers in our region. Th e slope faces due south, with Riesling vines growing here in a bed of gravelly loam soil that gives their wines an oft-noted spicy character.

Review:
Electric acidity fuels the notes of citrus oil and yellow apple, with elements of mint and slate gliding along the edges. Sleek, complex and focused, offering good range and a lingering finish. Drink now through 2029. –AZ

Review:
Pear and fresh lime deliver crunch and piquancy in an interpretation of Kahlenberg that is unusually fruit-oriented but still preserves site-typical stoniness. The satiny texture is also unusually flattering, and the finish features abundant refreshment with a shimmering exchange of fruit and stone. “It took a decade before we really understood this site,” averred Dönnhoff, “but now I think we have it nailed.” He’ll get no argument on that score from me.
