Ott Ried Rosenberg 1 ÖTW Wagram Grüner Veltliner
The top Grüner Veltliner each year is from the Feuersbrunner Rosenberg Erste Lage vineyard, acquired by Bernhard’s father in 1961 with vines dating back to 1956. The soils here are deep loess, which coupled with the 54 year old vines create a complex and harmonious concentration. The wine is mind-bending with tight minerality infused with an intensity nearly impossible to find elsewhere. The Rosenberg is recently RESPEKT – biodynamic certified.
Press & Reviews
A fruity, open style, sporting apple, celery, lentil, earth and floral flavors, this has a brisk and mouthwatering, lemony finish. Lovely balance. Drink now through 2024. 100 cases imported.
Flinty and rather closed. Not only extremely concentrated, but also very refined for grüner veltliner with an almost endless finish. Needs a couple of years before it will give its best, but this is a masterpiece of elegance from Bernhard Ott. Screw cap.
Powerfully redolent of peach, pear and musk melon, peony and basil, mock orange and honeysuckle, this delivers drippingly-ripe fruit, cooling herbal accents and musky liquid perfume on a glossy, full but in no way weighty palate. Even the vegetable side of this wine – an amalgam of roasted winter squash and caramelized parsnip – suggests sweetness, as does the sort of mineral-rich, saline savor of raw scallop that tugs at the salivary glands in a lusciously-lingering finish. “I left these crushed grapes with all of their stems sitting for 24 hours,” relates Ott, “and to be honest I was getting a little nervous about my decision. Then, after it finished fermenting, there was a stage during which it was so reduced it was absolutely undrinkable.” (But he’s not nervous now ;- )
