Gewurztraminer ‘Sinnerman’, Ovum
Named after the meteoric Nina Simone track, Sinnerman is a once in decade wine. What looked to be a cool harvest around 22 brix, we chose to leaf strip the vine to expose the Gewurz to sunlight for additional ripening before harvest the following week. Little did we know a warm wind was working it’s way through the cold vineyard, sucking water out of each cluster, thereby concentrating the delicate flavors that a cool vintage brings. Over a week later, the fruit was hand harvested at 3am and brought to the winery where we found our sugars had leapt to uncanny levels, while the acid and balance of the fruit was still in check. Native fermented in 500L Acacia puncheons we had built in France, Sinnerman was left to age on lees for nearly 9 months. A modest dose of SO2 was added before cross flow filtration (necessary because it did not go through ML fermentation), then bottled in 500ml. 2017 Sinnerman Gewurz is a light gold in color, and offers an enchanting nose of chamomile, chestnut, asian pear, pineapple, honeysuckle…all while showing restraint. The palate confirms the aromats and brings an exceptionally rich texture only to be cut down by tight, focused acid. Unquestionably one of the best, most exciting wines we’ve produced thus far.
