Chardonnay, ‘Hawk Hill Vineyard’, Joseph Swan

The closest vineyard to the coast that we source fruit from, Hawk Hill Vineyard is on a hillside high off the valley floor in Freestone. A cooler climate than any of our other vineyards, the marine influence extends ripening time, while being high enough elevation to escape the fogline most of the time. This chardonnay fruit has occasionally been the last grapes harvested, deep into November! The vines are Clone 5 chardonnay on 3309 rootstock using a modified Scott Henry trellising system.

Pressed gently whole cluster, immediately after harvesting. Being from the cooler climate, more minerality character calls for 100% neutral French oak barrel fermentation, then aged sur lees (lees stirring) for 10 months before bottling.

13.5%ABV.

Tasting Notes

Aromas of citrus blossoms, crushed oyster shells and honeysuckle. In the mouth it has vibrant but not off-putting acidity. There is a nervous energy that allows it to dance between leanness and richness. A great food wine but I would be happy to drink it only accompanied by a second glass!
