Carmignano Riserva, Piaggia

The Carmignano Riserva is the flag ship wine of Piaggia, showcasing a modern interpretation of Carmignano’s Sangiovese base blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The grapes are planted in an old vineyard near Pogetto, over clay and galestro soils on a south-west facing exposure. The grapes are all hand-picked and go thorugh punch down and pump-overs during fermentation. Aging occurs in French oak for 18 months and racked before bottling, with no fining or filtration.

Tasting Notes

Aromas of ripe fruit, cassis and raspberries, embellished with elegant hints of tobacco, chocolate and sweet spices.  The enveloping palate has great structure and elegance, with excellent quality tannins which make it particularly suitable for long-term aging.

Bright plum, black currant and blackberry flavors are backed by solid structure in this big, monolithic version that begs for grilled meat. Long finish.

Leather, smoke, grilled herbs and tobacco add complexity to a core of dark red fruit in a powerful, structured wine that is going to need time to settle down. The long, resonant finish points to a very bright future.
