Cabernet Sauvignon, 'Napa Valley', Accendo
Introducing the third year of severe drought, the 2013-2014 winter was one of the driest on record in California, and rainfall totals for Napa Valley were only half of average. However, with over 11 inches falling in February, what little rain there was came at a perfect time, and provided the grapevines with adequate moisture for good shoot growth, healthy canopies and a moderate, even fruit set. With very few heat spikes, the weather was beautifully consistent, and mild temperatures throughout the summer resulted in an exceptional vintage and an early harvest.
Our grapes were hand-picked between September 15th and October 3rd, fermented individually in small tanks, aged in 100% new French oak barrels and bottled after 22 months in barrel on July 29th, 2016.
On the nose, this wine is intense, vibrant and lively, showing intriguing notes of earth, cedar, tobacco leaf and smoky black tea. In the mouth, the wine is fresh, poised and precise, with layers of dark fruits and silky tannins that perfectly support its sweet core. A wine of precision, nuance and tension, Accendo's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon continues to grow in bottle. There is a sense of translucent vibrancy in the 2014 that is especially admirable. Red and purplish-toned fruit, lavender, mint and crushed rocks are all beautifully delineated, but it is the wine's shape and drive that I find most alluring today. This is a fabulous showing.
