Cabernet Franc, ‘Cot-Fermented’, Onabay Vineyards
Onabay Vineyards’ name is playful — referring to its setting in Southold bordering Peconic Bay — but its early wines are serious and promising, especially the 2007s.
Formerly Miceli Vineyards, the tract, now 19 acres, was planted in 1991 by Chris Miceli, who sold his fruit to North Fork wineries. Brad Anderson; his wife, Francesca; and two daughters bought it in 2006. Mr. Anderson and one daughter, Chiara Anderson Edmands, run it day-to-day.
Bruce Schneider produces Onabay’s wines at the Premium Wine Group, a for-hire winery in Mattituck, where he also makes his own Schneider Vineyards wines. Steve Mudd of Mudd’s Vineyard, in Southold, manages Onabay’s vines.
