Bourbon Whiskey, '9th Floor #1', Single Barrel, New Riff Distilling
Founded in 2014 by Ken Lewis, a Kentucky liquor retailer and entrepreneur, New Riff crafts a range of whiskies with a focus on Bourbon and Rye as well as Kentucky Wild Gin. Independently and family-owned, the freedom from outside pressures and interests has allowed New Riff to set meaningful standards of quality, distinguishing them amongst the ranks of Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey distilleries. Although some of their practices are not necessarily new to the world of whiskey, it is unusual to find a distillery adhering simultaneously to so many traditional methods and with such an attention to detail. Sourcing non-GMO grains, using mineral-rich water from an aquifer below the distillery, allowing slow and open fermentation, distilling in copper only, and leaning heavily upon the strict stipulations of Bottled-in-Bond production, New Riff cuts no corners. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the accolades for this small distillery continue to grow.

Highly coveted and limited in nature, each single barrel selection of New Riff is selected and approved by a production panel at the distillery. Barrel #15-6990 was selected exclusively for Skurnik and allows an opportunity to enjoy a one-of-a-kind iteration of New Riff bourbon without purchasing the entire barrel. Distilled on December 31, 2015, this whiskey is just over 4 years in age and bottled at cask strength. Incidentally, the proof of this bourbon, 104.4, is an example of proof lowering over time (all New Riff whiskey enters barrel at 110 proof), a trend reflective of the barrel’s positioning at New Riff’s rickhouse in Central Kentucky as opposed to their rickhouse in Northern Kentucky, 2 hours away. Expect notes of honey and sweet melon on the nose, with a palate of citrus and baking spice. 52.2% ABV
