Earlier this week, Caroline Frey, owner and winemaker of Paul Jaboulet Aîné, spent a monumental three days with the Skurnik Wines team conducting the most comprehensive tastings this legendary property has ever done on US soil. Ten years ago, the Frey Family purchased this wine treasure of the Northern Rhône and lovingly invested tremendous resources to restore and improve upon its greatness. The tastings and seminars focused on the conversion of the estate vineyards to biodynamic principals and the intimate partnerships Caroline and the Paul Jaboulet Aîné team have forged with every family grower they work with. The excitement generated by the series of vertical and current release tastings was a convincing display of this historic domaine’s past greatness and remarkable present lineup. The aging capability of the iconic Hermitage La Chapelle revealed all its majesty (highlights were the remarkable 1998, 1995 and 1985 out of magnum), and the incredible 1990 and 1995 Domaine de Thalabert Crozes-Hermitage once again proved why this is the finest wine of the appellation. Not to be outdone was the lineup of groundbreaking whites led by the breathtakingly pure 2014 Condrieu Domaine des Amandiers and 2014 Hermitage Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to taste such a remarkable range of pristine Paul Jaboulet Aîné with Caroline. As the exclusive national importer for Paul Jaboulet Aîné wines, we were thrilled that so many of the country’s finest sommeliers, journalists, and wine professionals were able to experience this historic event!
